Golf Reporter Amanda Balionis Has PGA Tour Champ Burst Into Tears With Deeply Personal Question

Torrey Pines can be tough, but Harris English has been loyal to playing on some of the most difficult setups. He had played on the Torrey Pines golf courses almost every year of his 14-year pro career. In fact, back in 2015, the golfer birdied the 72nd hole to get into a 4-way tie at the Farmers Insurance Open; Unfortunately, he could only make par at 18 on the first extra hole and Jason Day walked away victorious. Six years later, in the 2021 U.S. Open, English produced a splendid final-round 68 on Torrey South. That was until Jon Rahm charged on the back nine and shot 67 to win and English had to settle for the third position. What is his current situation?
Holding his daughter, the 35-year-old recalled his journey and what his first victory meant to him. English was emotional when talking to Amanda Balionis of CBS about how the journey has been for him to get back into the winner’s circle. The reporter asked him: “1,308 days since your last victory. There has been injury, there has been surgery, there has been the newest addition to your family. Tell us about the journey that brought you back into the winner’s circle?”
English’s passion for golf was evident from his words. He stated: “It’s always a journey. I’m 35 now, been doing this for 14 years and it never gets easier. I love being out here on the PGA Tour. I mean, this is what we play for.“
The 2021 Travelers Championship winner had to go against a tough field and disruptive weather before clinching his fifth victory on the PGA Tour. He had to battle injury, surgery, and many tough tournaments before earning this well-fought victory.
“I have so much respect for this game and respect for a lot of players out here. It’s hard to win. I might have looked calm out there on the course, but inside your emotions are going crazy.” The crack in his voice was proof that English was grateful for pulling through during a tough day with fierce competition. The 35-year-old displayed steely nerves as he fended off a charging Sam Stevens, who shot a brilliant 4 under par, the highest in Round 4.

Tough conditions defined the Farmers Insurance Open 2025, as disruptive winds and darkness forced suspension of play twice on Day 2. But at the end of Day 3, Harris English emerged with a sole lead after scoring three birdies to end the round. His 9 under par was under threat from Andrew Novak, who scored 8 under par. An exciting final day was set at the Torrey Pines Golf Course.
Interesting Fact: This was the fourth year that the Farmers was shifted away from Sunday. It is the only PGA Tour stop with a Saturday final round. This was done so that they could avoid clashing with the NFL’s AFC and NFC Championship games.
A thrilling Farmers Insurance Open final day
While Novak and English battled for the top spot on Day 4, Sam Stevens, who had 3 under par at the end of Day 3, was slowly inching his way to the top. English, after an eight-hole playoff against Kramer Hickok, was undaunted.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour

Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
