Rory McIlroy believes Donald Trump is ‘on the [PGA] Tour’s side’ in talks with Saudi Arabia’s PIF
Rory McIlroy has revealed that former U.S. President Donald Trump supports the PGA Tour in its ongoing discussions with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). McIlroy, who recently played a round of golf with Trump, noted that despite hosting several LIV Golf events at his courses, Trump is not a fan of LIV’s 54-hole format. McIlroy stated, “I thought we had a good discussion. I learned that he’s not a fan of the LIV format. I was like, but you’ve hosted their events. He was like, yeah, but it doesn’t mean that I like it. So I think he’s on the Tour’s side.”
Trump’s close connections, especially with figures like Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed bin Salman, position him to be a key figure in the unification talks between the two tours, which have yet to reach a resolution. McIlroy emphasized Trump’s potential influence, stating, “He has direct access to Yasir’s boss [Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman]. Not many people have that. Not many people can say, I want you to get this deal done, and by the way, I’m speaking to your boss. I’m going to tell him the same thing.”
McIlroy, who has been a vocal critic of LIV Golf, acknowledged the positive financial impact it has had on the PGA Tour but emphasized the importance of unity in the sport going forward. He stated, “I think it has benefited everyone. I think the game of professional golf is in a good place. I think we just need to get to a point where we all move forward together.”
The ongoing discussions aim to unify men’s professional golf, with the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and PIF working towards a potential agreement. Trump’s involvement could be instrumental in bridging gaps between the parties, given his unique position and relationships within the golfing and political spheres.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
