Charley Hull makes surprising golf admission with $5million payday on offer
Golf star Charley Hull is returning to action at the PIF Saudi Ladies International but has admitted that winning the grand prize isn’t necessarily her top priority
Charley Hull is set to return to action but has admitted her main focus is away from the golf course.
The 28-year-old was last seen in Riyadh during her Aramco Team Series victory in November. This week, Hull returns to Saudi Arabia as she looks to kick off her Ladies European Tour season – following the offseason – with another win at the PIF Saudi Ladies International.
The world No.11 is among the favorites following her eight consecutive top-20 finishes. However, Hull has admitted that she is more concerned with cracking a new 5km run personal best than competing for the top spots in Riyadh, which boasts a total prize pot of $5million.
“My main goal actually isn’t on the golf course,” Hull told Sky Sports. “I want to try and get my 5k run time down to 20 minutes by the end of the year. It’s around 26 minutes at the moment.
“I don’t train in golf. I have zero interest in training in golf. I don’t want to just be a golfer. I want to be an athlete. I train because it’s good for my mental health and it’s good for me. I just enjoy it as a hobby.”
While Hull may not be solely focused on golf, she will have two opportunities to earn a significant payday at the PIF Saudi Ladies International. The event will begin with a team format with a $140,000 grand prize. The top 60 players will then compete in the individual tournament, where the winner will receive $675,000.
The prize money equals the men’s event, and Hull has spoken about the positive impact this can have on growing the sport. “It’s really good and moves the game forward,” Hull said. “It’s pretty cool to have the same prize money as men. So I think it’s really, really good.”
The team tournament, consisting of 28 teams of four, will run across 36 holes alongside a 54-hole individual stroke play event. Hull is teamed up with Germany’s Chiara Noja and looks forward to playing alongside her.
“Yeah, she’s super. She’s a really good player,” Hull added. “I’ve got Maria Fassi on my team as well. I think it’s just going to be super fun and it’s nice to have people to chat to out there. I just want to have fun on the golf course and feel like part of a team.”

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
