Rickie Fowler finds solace at Rory McIlroy’s expense after brutal PGA Tour rejection
Rickie Fowler has endured a tough few weeks, having been denied a spot at the Arnold Palmer Invitational this weekend, but got his own back on Monday night as his New York Golf Club eliminated Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common from the TGL picture.
Fowler’s on-course fortunes haven’t been great recently, and hasn’t secured a top-10 finish in his opening five events of the 2025 season. As a result of his poor form, the 36-year-old was denied a sponsor’s exemption to the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
He will feature at the Players Championship, but will have the weekend off this week after failing to secure a way into the Arnold Palmer. Despite his disappointing start to the 2025 season, Fowler managed a rare high point on Monday night as he helped his New York team beat Boston in a 10-6 beatdown .
The result confirmed McIlroy’s Boston will miss out on the playoffs, having failed to win a game throughout the entire season in a bitter disappointment for the league co-founder.
New York was close to winning the regular season title, and will now face eventual winners Los Angeles Golf Club in the playoff semi-finals. With a real chance at winning the inaugural TGL title, Fowler expressed he doesn’t plan on doing anything differently in preparation for the playoffs.
He said: “I don’t think we’re changing anything. We continue to keep getting better and better and getting more comfortable out there. Xander passed his physical today. Yeah, we’re ready to roll. It’s been fun.
Like I said, we’re heading and trending all the right direction, especially after starting the season 0-2. It kind of became a do-or-die situation from there on out. Other than losing the close one to LA, we’ve played some good golf, and we’re ready to continue to make that even better.”

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
