Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele chasing $9M win after Players struggles
Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele’s New York Golf Club side defeated the top-seeded Los Angeles Golf Club 6-4 in the TGL semifinals on Monday to reach the final
Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele have bounced back from their disappointing performance at The Players Championship, securing a place in the TGL Final Series.
The American pair both made the cut at TPC Sawgrass last week but struggled significantly, with Schauffele finishing +13 and Fowler at +12, landing them at the bottom of the leaderboard among those who made it to the weekend. The duo quickly refocused their efforts at New York Golf Club, where they play alongside Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young in Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods’ TGL.
NYGC went head-to-head with top-seeded Los Angeles Golf Club for a spot in the final series on Monday, and Fowler and Schauffele did not disappoint. NYGC pulled off an unexpected 6-4 victory in the TGL semifinals, ensuring the team’s advancement to face the winner of Tuesday’s semifinal between No. 2 seed The Bay Golf Club and No. 3 seed Atlanta Drive Golf Club.
This win guarantees NYGC a minimum payout of $4.5 million, which could skyrocket to a staggering $9 million if it clinches the inaugural TGL championship. LAGC had remained undefeated in regulation this season, but it stumbled in the playoff atmosphere while Fowler and Schauffele thrived.
NYGC has now gone 3-0-1 over its last four matches, and Schauffele was delighted with the outcome. “We’re all pretty happy,” he said. “We thought it was possible but we knew it was gonna be a long road, so we’re definitely happy to be here.”
Victory was sealed when Tommy Fleetwood’s 5-foot birdie putt to win the hole narrowly missed. Fowler, who had his best individual performance of the TGL season, initially had the chance to sink a 9-foot birdie for the win, but his miss gave Fleetwood an opening.
“They gave us a little gift there,” Fowler added. “Not the way we wanted to win, we wanted to close out in style, but we’ll take it and we’re looking forward to next week.”
Fowler tied the match at the second with a 5-foot birdie, and he added another 6-footer to win the sixth hole as NYGC took a 3-2 lead into the Singles phase. The 36-year-old scored another point in Singles at the 11th before Schauffele extended New York’s lead to 6-3 by defeating Collin Morikawa at the 13th.
The TGL semifinals roll on as The Bay, featuring Shane Lowry, Min Woo Lee, and Ludvig Aberg, squares off against Atlanta – boasting Justin Thomas, Billy Horschel, and Patrick Cantlay – at SoFi Center on March 18.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
