Rory McIlroy and wife Erica Stoll’s moment after Players Championship speaks volumes
Rory McIlroy was joined by his wife Erica Stoll and daughter Poppy as he won the Players Championship on Sunday, with the couple’s marriage appearing to be back on track
The year 2024 proved to be a turbulent one for Rory McIlroy. The golf star, aged 35 and with four major championships under his belt, faced a widely publicized split from his wife Erica Stoll.
But in 2025, months after backtracking on their initial decision to file for divorce, Stoll, alongside their daughter Poppy, were there to cheer on McIlroy as he beat J.J. Spaun in a playoff round, earning him his second career Players Championship title.
McIlroy saw news of his divorce proceedings with Stoll break on the eve of the PGA Championship last year before they eventually performed a U-turn in June 2024. Since then, the couple has demonstrated that they’re reconciling, sharing a loving kiss in a telling moment of their bond after McIlroy’s latest victory.
Stoll waited to greet McIlroy with Poppy, who’s celebratory, handing her dad a red flower post-win, didn’t go unnoticed.
A delighted McIlroy mentioned during a press conference: “Poppy picked it for me. She gave it to me just after I won. I think there was one more flower in it but it disintegrated in my back pocket. But she, she gave it to me.”
In an electrifying three-hole playoff, McIlroy secured a score of 14 compared to Spaun’s 17, marking this victory as the celebrated golfer’s 28th win on the PGA Tour.
“I am unbelievably proud and happy to win my second Players,” he expressed. “It’s the third time I’ve won on St Patrick’s Day. It’s been a good luck charm for me.”
The world’s second-ranked golfer might have sidestepped the playoff had he not mixed a birdie on the 16th with bogeys on the final two holes.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
