Rickie Fowler’s Justin Thomas comment speaks volumes as Jordan Spieth concedes defeat
Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth have been pushing each other at the Valspar Championship after friend Rickie Fowler revealed which of them chirps the most on the course
The trio regularly travel to tournaments together, celebrating their successes and supporting each other during tough times. The group, including former pro Smylie Kaufman, were nicknamed the ‘spring break group’ after taking a trip together during spring break.
They also motivate each other through friendly competition. As you expect, plenty of light-hearted ‘chat’ flies around on off the course. Speaking about their relationship on the Up & Adam Show hosted by Kay Adams recently, Fowler said: “We are always friends, and I think your friends are the ones you want to beat the most. It’s fun when we do get paired together.”
He added: “It’s fun when your friends play well. But it’s even more fun when you beat your friends when they play well.” Pressed on which of the pair he would prefer not to lose to, Fowler added: “It’d probably be JT. JT chirps a little bit more.”
Fowler’s comment sums up how close the trio are and how well they know each other – and could serve as a warning for Spieth, who may soon find himself on the end of Thomas’ ‘chirping’.
Onto the present day, Thomas is on course to win the personal battle between him and Spieth at the Valspar Championship in Florida. Thomas stormed into contention with a six-under-par round of 65 to leave him tied fifth at five-under, two shots off the lead jointly held by Nico Echavarria, Jacob Bridgeman and Viktor Hovland.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
