Amanda Balionis takes sly dig at Rory McIlroy when interviewing Bryson DeChambeau
Bryson DeChambeau was interviewed by Amanda Balionis after his final round at the PGA Championship, with the presenter appearing to take a swipe at Rory McIlroy
Amanda Balionis seemed to deliver a sly jab at Rory McIlroy during her post-round chat with Bryson DeChambeau at the PGA Championship.
At the close of their interview, Balionis said to DeChambeau, “Thank you for taking the time – I know you don’t have to take the time, but we appreciate it,” which some saw as an indirect criticism aimed at McIlroy. The golfer from Northern Ireland notably dodged all media contact for the fourth day in a row, straying from his usual form.
Making his first major showing after completing the career Grand Slam, McIlroy did not enjoy the ideal opening he would’ve hoped for, needing to swap out his driver. Moreover, his efforts at the PGA Championship certainly fell short of what many anticipated.
McIlroy endured a difficult major, carding scores of 74, 69, 72, and 72 to wind up three over par. His evasion of the press only heightened annoyance amongst journalists keen on insights from a leading figure in the sport.
In stark contrast stood DeChambeau, who has a reputation for being media-friendly. Although DeChambeau’s game was solid at the championship, difficulties arose for him on the final Sunday, leaving him tied for second, reports the Irish Star.
Nonetheless, he spared time for an insightful discussion with Balionis, divulging details about his tactical approach, his mental preparation, and his tackling of the challenging Quail Hollow course.
Discussing his round, DeChambeau expressed his frustration: “I’m baffled right now. Just felt like things just didn’t go my way this week. Drove it really well. I drove it as good as I can, as of right now, I gave myself a good chance. I just felt like a couple breaks went a different way.”
He reflected on the challenges he faced, saying, “There were times where I feel like I pressed. Green Mile did it to me yesterday and kind of did it to me again today, and that’s golf, man. I’ve got to be more precise and fix what I can fix to make myself more consistent and get up there, the likes what have Scottie is doing right now.”
Looking forward to the U.S. Open next month, DeChambeau shared his determination: “I’m going to work my butt to have make that happen. It’s all up to manufacturing. We’ll see what happens but I’m keen on finding something and I’m keen on improving. I’m excited for that.”
The 2025 PGA Championship was ultimately dominated by Scottie Scheffler, who lifted the Wanamaker Trophy with poise and consistency. Scheffler, whose ascent in the golf world has been steady, finished the tournament at an impressive 11-under par, securing his victory as Jon Rahm’s challenge faded.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
