What Jon Rahm says amateur golfers do that is so frustrating when he plays alongside them that is actually ‘easily fixable’
Golf is a hard sport for even the best in the world so when amateurs make things even tougher for themselves, the likes of Jon Rahm and other top players naturally feel frustrated.
Rahm, like so many in the pro ranks, has played alongside and witnessed countless amateur golfers of all standards.
And like so many pro players, the Spaniard sees the same old problems when it comes to these amateur players.
Jon Rahm says what amateur golfers get wrong all the time
Like so many players, Rahm has his own thoughts on what the most common issue is for the amateur player.
And in speaking to Golf.com, Rahm revealed that the biggest issue he sees is when it comes to distances.
“Most common with the average player, they’re hoping they can get an 8-iron like 160 yards because they got it there once in like 300 balls. Whereas maybe if you try the seven or six iron to where if you miss you still get there and give yourself a chance,” Rahm said.
“We hear it a lot, like, ‘Oh I hit an eight 160 once’, so forever I’m going to hit the eight from 160. It’s always funny to me when I’m standing next to them, I tee off a 100 yards behind and it’s like I got a nine iron and they’ll be like ‘Yeah me too’. No you won’t. An upside down nine, hit a six, and it might get there but yeah, that would be the most common thing we see that is easily fixable.”
Distance control is key to any golfer
This is such a good point from Jon Rahm. Every player below the pro level, especially the average weekend golfer, will under-club.
Everyone has done it as well. As Rahm says, you might hit a club a certain distance that once time and then automatically assume that that’s how far it flies every single time.
But Rahm is bang on in his comments here. Most amateur players struggle for the consistent strike that a pro gets and with that, comes the loss of distance and control.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
