Arrogant’ Rory McIlroy slammed over behavior in U.S. Open interview
Rory McIlroy addressed the media after the third round of the U.S. Open at Oakmont on Saturday, but a number of golf fans were left unimpressed by his comments
Rory McIlroy believes he has “earned the right” to do what he likes when asked why he has regularly avoided media since the Masters.
On Saturday at the U.S. Open, McIlroy was unable to climb up the leaderboard on moving day, shooting a three-over 73 to sit at 10-over through three rounds. However, for the first time at Oakmont, the Northern Irishman decided to show his face before the media.
At the PGA Championship, McIlroy finished three-over – 14 shots behind winner Scottie Scheffler – and refused to speak to the media after all four rounds. He had continued to shirk media through the U.S. Open, with the five-time major champion struggling on the course since his emotional Augusta win, too.
Following a third round in which McIlroy – usually so happy to be available for media – tallied six bogeys, including on the 18th, he spoke before cameras. Asked if he decided to go the other way for the last six major rounds because of his misfiring form, McIlroy was clear.
“No, not really,” McIlroy said. “It’s more a frustration with you guys.”
He added: “I’m just, yeah, I don’t know. I have, I’ve been totally available for the last few years, and I’m not saying- maybe not you guys, but maybe more just the whole thing.”
When pushed if the driver issues and ‘leak’ he had at Quail Hollow contributed, McIlroy continued: “I mean, that was a part of it. Yeah, that was a part of it. But it’s not as if- like at Augusta I skipped you guys on Thursday, so yeah, again, it’s not if as if- it’s not out of the ordinary. I’ve done it before; I’m just doing it a little more often.”
It was then put to McIlroy that, in the past, he has said that he carried the PGA Tour, in part due to his commitment to media. He agreed and shed insight into his decision-making process by stating: “I feel like I’ve earned the right to do whatever I want to do, yeah.”

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
