Viktor Hovland’s 5-word message to JJ Spaun after incredible U.S. Open win
JJ Spaun clinched his first major championship as he won the U.S. Open at Oakmont, finishing with a monstor putt in front of playing partner and fellow contender Viktor Hovland
Viktor Hovland offered a congratulatory message to U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun after the American won his first major title in style.
On Sunday, Spaun got off to a horrible start at Oakmont before the rain came and suspended play. The 34-year-old shot five-over through the first six holes to fall to the brink of contention, but he dragged his way back once the rain fell.
Bested by Rory McIlroy in a playoff at The Players, Spaun hit a sublime tee shot on 17 to birdie and take a one-shot lead. On the 18th, he made a scarcely-believable putt for birdie to card a two-over 72 and win the U.S. Open by two shots.
The crowd roared at the 18th, but Hovland – his playing partner – was still going. The Norwegian tapped in a par putt to card a three-over final round, ensuring he finished two-over for the championship.
While clearly deflated that his major championship dreams had not been realized, Hovland still showcased his sportsmanship by approaching Spaun. He shook his hand and simply said: “That was impressive dude, congrats.”
Spaun credited his brutal loss to McIlroy with building his confidence, and he cashed in at Oakmont. Spaun made the longest putt by anyone in the field this week to win the U.S. Open in style and become a major champion in the process.
Soaked in rain and delirium, Spaun danced with his caddie before embracing his wife Melody and their two daughters on the side of the green. He had to ask one of his daughters to be quiet for Hovland to finish, so both men showed good sportsmanship at the end.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
