Shane Lowry was caught off guard by Scottie Scheffler during The Open Championship round
Scottie Scheffler continued to lead the way at The Open Championship after shooting a 64 on day two, with the world No. 1 even impressing past major champions
Scottie Scheffler’s golf prowess is so on point at the moment that even major champions are dishing out compliments during tournaments. So impressive is his form that former The Open Championship victors are taken aback by their own accolades as he entered the fray hot off an eighth-place finish at the Scottish Open.
The top-ranked golfer in the world is tearing up Royal Portrush Golf Club, kicking off with a solid 68 in the opening round and firing off a stunning 64 in Round 2. Scheffler’s Friday showcase featured a tally of eight birdies against a single bogey, securing a dominant spot on the leaderboard despite intermittent rain and blustery conditions.
Shane Lowry, the champion of the 184th edition, couldn’t help but praise Scheffler’s tee shot on the fifth hole while it was still soaring through the air, even as his own hopes were dashed by a harsh penalty.
“Shane told me ‘good shot’ while my ball was in the air,” Scheffler recounted to the press post-round. “We were kind of walking off the tee box, and he goes, ‘Man, I can’t believe I told you good shot while your ball was still flying.'”.
That driveable 375-yard par 4 marked Scheffler’s second birdie of the day and kicked off a trio of consecutive birdies that solidified his lead in the tournament.
On a course where Rory McIlroy settled for a bogey on the same stretch and only two players scored eagles, Scheffler confessed he wasn’t sure where the ball would end up, yet trusted that the shot, which felt right as it left his hands, would pay off on the green.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
