Jordan Spieth shares the ‘huge’ piece of advice he has been given from Jack Nicklaus about playing Augusta National
Jordan Spieth made a seriously impressive start to his Masters career but he’s now revealed that some key advice from Jack Nicklaus was vital to his success.
The three-time major winner has had some of the best performances of his career around Augusta National and won the event in just his second appearance back in 2015.
Indeed, in Spieth’s first five appearances at the Masters, he finished inside the top three four times, with the other being an impressive T11.
Since that win in 2015, Spieth has added the US Open and The Open but failed to land the PGA Championship, putting him in the same boat as Rory McIlroy, who was in search of the grand slam up until 2025.
Still, at just 32, Spieth has time on his side to add more majors to the trophy cabinet and if he can keep on with the advice he got from Jack Nicklaus back in 2014, he might well land another green jacket.
What Jack Nicklaus told Jordan Spieth about playing Augusta National
As a young golfer like Spieth was at the time, if Jack Nicklaus approaches you to give you some advice, there’s a good chance you’ll listen.
Sure enough, Spieth did just that and finished second on his debut at Augusta before winning the year after and then finishing second again in 2016.
Now, speaking to the PGA Tour’s media ahead of the Ryder Cup, Spieth has explained just what Nicklaus told him before his opening tee shots.
“I received advice from Jack Nicklaus before my first Masters and he said ‘Although it doesn’t seem like it at Augusta, you can always play from the centre of every green’”, Spieth revealed when asked what the best advice he’d ever had is.
“And that was huge as I started out. Didn’t try to force anything in my first few years there and it led to a lot of success.”
Jordan Spieth’s Masters record
Jordan Spieth will know deep down that he has not quite fulfilled his potential just yet.
Three majors, including The Masters before he was even 24 show just how talented he was and since then, it’s simply not been good enough.
However, when it comes to Augusta, it’s a place Spieth knows how to succeed at and his record there says it all.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
