Trump’s attendance at Ryder Cup will boost team morale, golfer Scottie Scheffler says
President Donald Trump is set to attend the 45th Ryder Cup at in New York on Friday.
The news apparently pleases Scottie Scheffler, as the top golfer said he thinks Trump is good for morale.
To have the president here, it’s been a tough few weeks for our country with some of the stuff that’s been going on, and to have our president here and for us to represent the United States of America, albeit being at a golf tournament, is extremely important for us, and we’re excited to be on home soil with the home crowd, and we’re ready to get this tournament started,” Scheffler told reporters during a news conference on Tuesday.
Scheffler also said Trump calls or texts him after wins to congratulate him.
“The president is kid of funny. He loves the game of golf. He loves supporting golfers. And I get a call or a text from him sometimes after wins,” Scheffler said, adding that the president usually tells him “great job.”
Scheffler’s praise for Trump didn’t stop there.
“He’s one of those guys when you’re around him he does such a good job of, like, almost like feeding confidence into everybody around him. That was one of the things I noticed a lot with the little bit of time I spent (with) him. He treats everybody the same and treats people with the utmost respect. And whether you’re the person serving us lunch or the caddie on the golf course or the guy who’s the president of the club that we’re at, he treats everybody like they’re the greatest person in the world. And I don’t think he has any plans to address us as a team, but I’m sure if things go well, we’ll hear from him this week,” Scheffler said.
The Ryder Cup will mark Trump’s third appearance at a New York sporting event in September, as he went to Yankee Stadium for a baseball game to honor U.S. heroes on the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, as well as attended the men’s U.S. Open final on Sept. 7.
The Ryder Cup, which pits the best of America against the best of Europe, will be held Friday through Sunday on the Black Course of Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
