Novak Djokovic told he ‘doesn’t count’ in Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner comparison
Novak Djokovic has been written off as a Grand Slam contender by Frances Tiafoe, who believes the Serb is no longer capable of challenging Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
Novak Djokovic has been warned that he can no longer consistently compete with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. The Serbian tennis star is still on the hunt for his 25th Grand Slam win, having most recently made it to the semi-finals of the US Open.
Djokovic found himself outmatched by eventual champion Alcaraz in the first three matches, marking the third straight slam he’d lost in straight sets to either Alcaraz or Sinner. He had previously suffered defeats at both Wimbledon and the French Open at the hands of the Italian player.
At the age of 38, it’s not surprising that Djokovic struggles to keep up in lengthy matches against the world’s top two players. However, with over two years passing since anyone other than Alcaraz and Sinner claimed a Grand Slam title, there are growing concerns that men’s tennis is becoming a two-horse race.
There’s a longing for a third contender to emerge and challenge the dominant duo, but according to one current pro, Djokovic isn’t that player.
Frances Tiafoe told Olympics.com: “Novak doesn’t count [as a competitor]… I love him, but [he] doesn’t count… He’s a GOAT, he’s the best player of all time. He’s not with those guys.”
The American didn’t dismiss the idea of someone challenging Alcaraz and Sinner, much like Djokovic did to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal when he first emerged.
Tiafoe stated: “Who is that other guy or two to be there and maybe beat these guys? That would be the quote-unquote Novak and [Andy] Murray – before Novak went and did what he did. Who are those guys? And there’s a bunch of guys who can be that guy, right? So that’s really motivating me. It’s like, ‘See big picture.’ That’s motivating.”
Djokovic hasn’t played since the US Open and hasn’t participated in a non-slam event since the Geneva Open back in May – a tournament that marked his 100th victory on the ATP Tour. However, this is set to change next month when Djokovic returns to the court for the Shanghai Masters.

Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
