What Scottie Scheffler did on Saturday at the Ryder Cup which left Russell Henley in shock
Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley both endured a truly torrid time at the Ryder Cup last week.
Sure, Scheffler won his singles match against Rory McIlroy but on the whole, the 2025 Ryder Cup was a real disappointment for him personally.
The world number one played alongside Russell Henley in the two foursomes sessions, and the duo lost both matches.
Scheffler and Henley didn’t work as a Ryder Cup pairing throughout the week at Bethpage Black.
The fact that Henley took the tee shots on the odd holes on day one rather than Scheffler was a truly head-scratching move.
Europe’s data team apparently knew they had a point incoming after that decision from Scheffler and Henley on day one.
However, outside of his on-course struggles, what did Scheffler offer behind closed doors?
What Scottie Scheffler did on Saturday at the Ryder Cup shocked Russell Henley
When speaking on the Bible Caddie Podcast, one of Bradley’s vice-captains, Webb Simpson, lauded Scheffler for his presence in the US Ryder Cup team-room.
Simpson opened up on how much of an influence the world number one had behind the scenes at the Ryder Cup in spite of his poor form on the golf course.
He said: “There were multiple moments where I thought, beyond the competition, that you cannot muster up and synthetically create these type of moments.
“The way the team lifted up the world number one Scottie Scheffler on Saturday night. Scottie, in the press conference, he said it. He said last night was one of the lowest moments of my career but it turned into one of the most special moments of my career.
“It is what Keegan said to him in front of the entire team and wives.
“It’s the way Russell Henley was so encouraged by Scottie Scheffler, because Scottie asked Russell how he was doing late in the day and Russell Henley was so affected that Scottie Scheffler, the world number one with the weight of the golfing world on his shoulders, is actually concerned about how Russell Henley is doing.
“Russell was affected by that. And then Keegan got to encourage the team and Scottie.
“This week was more than any purse, anybody’s record, even the Ryder Cup score. It was about these moments that we will never forget.
“I went up to Scottie and I could barely talk and I finally got out that as much as I admire his golf, I admire the man he is, the way he loves the Lord, his wife and family, that means way more to me than 19 wins and all the majors.
“When you are able to be in a moment, you rise above the current and can see there is a lot of good things that are happening here in the midst of a struggle. It’s just so special.“
Keegan Bradley commented on Scheffler after the matches on Saturday at Bethpage had finished.
He said: “I’m going to tell you a story about Scottie Scheffler. Russell Henley, he said Scottie had the weight of the world on his shoulders, he’s the No. 1 player in the world. And he cared more about how Russell was doing than himself.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour
Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
