Aryna Sabalenka confirms the reason why she took extra time off from tennis after winning the US Open

Aryna Sabalenka is set to make her return to WTA action at the penultimate WTA 1000 event of the season in Wuhan.
The Belarusian is the reigning champion at the Wuhan Open and is looking to hoist the trophy for the fourth time in a row, having secured a three-peat last year.
She will play her first tour-level match in over a month, after taking an extended break from tennis following her US Open triumph, in which Sabalenka defeated Amanda Anisimova to clinch back-to-back crowns at Flushing Meadows.
Ahead of her title defence in China, the four-time major champion explained why she took extra time off after her New York triumph.

Giving an update on her fitness in a press conference before her first match, Sabalenka said: “I feel so good.
“I just didn’t want to rush my body into another tournament too soon [after the US Open]. I took some extra time to recover and make sure I’m ready.
“Now I can assure you that I will do my best. Hopefully, I can claim this beautiful trophy again.
“I’m really happy with my season. I’ve learned a lot of tough lessons, especially from the Grand Slam losses earlier this year.
“But those matches only made me stronger as a player and as a person. Of course, I’d love to change a couple of finals, but looking back, those experiences were needed to make me better.”
Aryna Sabalenka’s record at the Wuhan Open over the years
Sabalenka has never lost a match at the Wuhan Open, holding a record of 17-0 at the WTA 1000 competition.
She clinched consecutive titles in 2018 and 2019, before the tournament was cancelled from 2020 to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the return of the event to the tour during the 2024 season, Sabalenka picked up where she left off, defeating Qinwen Zheng in the final to win once more.
This year, after receiving a first-round bye, she will play either Anna Kalinskaya or Rebecca Stramkova in her opening match.

Djokovic learns fate in new home as Sabalenka addresses behaviour

Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
