Djokovic: My serve in Shanghai helps me a lot, I need to improve my baseline game
Djokovic will play against Spaniard Munar in the round of 16 of the Shanghai Masters
Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic defeated German Janik Hanfmann (2:1) yesterday after a comeback and advanced to the round of 16 of the Shanghai Masters, where he will play against Jaime Munar from Spain.
Djokovic, a four-time Shanghai Masters champion, achieved his 41st career victory at this tournament yesterday.
“I’ve said it before, it’s the same for any player who goes out on the court. It’s brutal when you have 80 percent humidity day in and day out. For guys, especially when it’s really hot, it’s even more brutal. That’s just the way it is, you just have to deal with it. For me, it’s even more challenging biologically to deal with it,” Djokovic admits.
Djokovic admits that it wasn’t easy for him against Hanfman.
“I had to weather a real storm. Janik played an incredible match from the start, one weak game on my part in the first set at 1:1 was enough for him to break and win the set. It was very difficult to read his serve, he served so precisely, he had a high percentage. He would fire on every ball, it was really difficult to play against a player like that,” says Djokovic.
Djokovic, as is tradition, has great fan support in China.
“The crowd really lifted me up at the end of the second set. I started to feel like I could stay in the rallies, I started to read serves, and he started to make more errors. I was getting through the ball easier. All in all, it was a big battle, something I’ve faced a lot in my career. I’ve played a lot of matches where I may not have been the better player for most of the match, but I held my own. To fight for three hours, at the Masters at the age of 38, in front of a full house chanting my name, was a dream come true. I’m grateful to them for that,” Djokovic added.
The Serbian tennis player is pleased with how his serve is serving him in Shanghai.
“Life on the court is easier or harder depending on how well or poorly you serve. I would say in the first two matches here, that was my best shot. It makes the difference. I’m really happy with my serve. I need to improve my game overall from the baseline. I know what’s needed and I hope that will be the case in the next round,” concluded Djokovic.

Express Sport brings you the latest tennis news from the Paris Masters.
We’re reaching the business end of the Paris Masters, as eight players become four in the French capital. Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy after Carlos Alcaraz was dumped out by Cameron Norrie in the Spaniard’s opening match. Norrie was then beaten by Valentin Vacherot, whose amazing 10-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level came to an end when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Canadian star Auger-Aliassime will face Alexander Bublik in the semis. Bublik defeated Alex de Minaur, who is among those to have already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner is through to his first Paris Masters semi-final after beating Ben Shelton. He’ll face defending champion Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough match against Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic is not involved in the Paris Masters, having decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, but he has learned his fate in the draw of next week’s ATP 250 in Athens. And over in Riyadh, the WTA Finals are about to get underway.
