Tokyo: Victoria Mboko wins first match since Montreal, snaps four-match losing streak

Published

on

Victoria Mboko’s four-match losing streak is over after the world No. 23 defeated Bianca Andreescu 6-3 6-3 in the first round of the WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo.

In an all-Canadian battle, it was the 19-year-old who made the first move and went 3-0 ahead. While the reigning Montreal champion blew the opening break, she earned another one in the eighth game and closed out the set on her serve in the following game.

In the second set, Mboko took Andreescu’s serve twice to complete her straight-set win.

During the match, the world No. 23 hit 20 winners and 18 unforced errors. Also, she converted four of her six break point chances in her first meeting versus Andreescu.

For Mboko – who stunningly became a WTA 1000 champion in Montreal as a lucky loser ranked outside the top-80 – this was her first win since the Canadian Open. And to no one’s surprise, she felt relieved after snapping her four-match losing streak.

In the Tokyo round-of-16, the Canadian will battle against Eva Lys, who defeated Katie Boulter. It will be their second clash as the 19-year-old beat Lys 6-4 6-4 at this year’s French Open.

Mboko hands out Andreescu her third consecutive loss

While Mboko ended her losing streak today, Andreescu’s prolonged as the 2019 US Open champion has now lost her last three matches. Overall, the former world No. 4 has only won one out of her last six matches.

Andreescu is currently ranked at No. 172 in the world and far from the form that made her a Grand Slam champion at the age of 19.

In one of her recent interviews, Andreescu confirmed that she was still believing that she could return to her past form and do more great things before retiring.

Emma Raducanu’s ex-coach joins another player’s team months after quitting role

Published

Emma Raducanu linked up with Yutaka Nakamura at the end of last year, but their partnership soon fizzled out.

Emma Raducanu’s former fitness trainer, Yutaka Nakamura, has officially started working with another player, this time on the men’s circuit. Raducanu announced that Nakamura had joined her team last December, and he was set to travel with her during “most weeks” of the season.

However, Nakamura has been absent from her box for most of the year, reportedly stepping back for personal reasons in the spring. Raducanu has since been working with other physios, including Daniel Pohl and Jerome Poupel. And Nakamura has now seemingly joined Grigor Dimitrov’s team, months after the Bulgarian’s heartbreaking injury retirement at Wimbledon.

Dimitrov led top seed and eventual champion Jannik Sinner by two sets to love in the fourth round of Wimbledon this summer when he suddenly went down in tears, picking up a pectoral injury.

The former world No. 3 received off-court treatment, but he was unable to continue and returned to the court to retire from the match. Dimitrov has since revealed that he spent two hours crying in the locker room, and he later shared a photo from the hospital.

During his injury layoff, Dimitrov’s team had a shake-up, and he parted ways with his coach, Jamie Delgado, who has since joined Jack Draper’s camp. The 34-year-old has now returned to competition at the Paris Masters with some new faces in his box.

One of them is Nakamura, who has a wealth of experience on the WTA Tour, also working with Maria Sharapova and Naomi Osaka, as well as Raducanu.
