Taylor Townsend shares what she was told by son after blowing 8 MPs in US Open loss

Published

on

Taylor Townsend reveals it was her little son’s message that comforted her following a devastating US Open loss.

After upsetting Jelena Ostapenko and Mirra Andreeva as a singles wildcard ranked at No. 139 in the world, Townsend also came inches away from beating last year’s Wimbledon winner Barbora Krejcikova. Midway through the second set, the American comfortably led 6-1 3-1. But then, the home player blew her break and also missed out on a match point on her rival’s serve in the 10th game.

However, failing to serve her way to a straight-set win and failing to realize match point wasn’t the worst thing that happened to Townsend – she stunningly failed to convert any of her seven match points in the second-set tie-break. The American tennis player was punished by paying the ultimate price as Krejcikova came back to win 1-6 7-6 (13) 6-3.

Moments after losing a match in which she held eight match points, Townsend burst into tears and placed a towel over her head. Later in her presser, she decided to reveal her interaction with her four-year-old son Adyn Aubrey – whom she calls AJ.

Townsend: Told AJ that I lost, and he was like ‘okay…’ I thought that was the attitude

“I was in the cool-down area. And he was like, ‘Hey, mom, let’s work out together.’ And I’m like, ‘Sir, I just played three hours. I don’t want to work out.’ He’s like, ‘let’s do some squats.’ I’m like, ‘I’m good,'” the 29-year-old shared.

“So, you know, that’s the kid thing, where it’s just like, they have no idea. And I actually said it because I wanted to know what he was going to say. I was like, ‘yeah.’ He was like, ‘Good job mom.’ I was like, ‘Thanks.’ I was like, ‘AJ I lost.’ He was like, ‘It’s okay.’ And I was like, ‘That’s the attitude.’ So I’m trying to embody that.”

Meanwhile, Townsend still has the US Open women’s doubles to go as she and Katerina Siniakova are set to meet Camila Osorio and Yuan Yue in the round-of-16.

Emma Raducanu’s ex-coach joins another player’s team months after quitting role

Published

Emma Raducanu linked up with Yutaka Nakamura at the end of last year, but their partnership soon fizzled out.

Emma Raducanu’s former fitness trainer, Yutaka Nakamura, has officially started working with another player, this time on the men’s circuit. Raducanu announced that Nakamura had joined her team last December, and he was set to travel with her during “most weeks” of the season.

However, Nakamura has been absent from her box for most of the year, reportedly stepping back for personal reasons in the spring. Raducanu has since been working with other physios, including Daniel Pohl and Jerome Poupel. And Nakamura has now seemingly joined Grigor Dimitrov’s team, months after the Bulgarian’s heartbreaking injury retirement at Wimbledon.

Dimitrov led top seed and eventual champion Jannik Sinner by two sets to love in the fourth round of Wimbledon this summer when he suddenly went down in tears, picking up a pectoral injury.

The former world No. 3 received off-court treatment, but he was unable to continue and returned to the court to retire from the match. Dimitrov has since revealed that he spent two hours crying in the locker room, and he later shared a photo from the hospital.

During his injury layoff, Dimitrov’s team had a shake-up, and he parted ways with his coach, Jamie Delgado, who has since joined Jack Draper’s camp. The 34-year-old has now returned to competition at the Paris Masters with some new faces in his box.

One of them is Nakamura, who has a wealth of experience on the WTA Tour, also working with Maria Sharapova and Naomi Osaka, as well as Raducanu.
